Edinburgh comfortably ranks among the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world.
Known in equal measure for being a tourist hotspot and a business centre of global importance, exploration of its historic streets will reward you with some of the best attractions, architecture and culture to be found anywhere.
If you’re new to Edinburgh, perhaps on a weekend break or for a business meeting, and would like to sample the flavour of the “Athens of the North”, try to make time for at least a few of these locations.
Accomodation in Edinburgh varies considerably and some benefit from views including the iconic Edinburgh Castle, an imposing fortress that sits atop the extinct volcano ‘Castle Rock’, and is the dominating feature of the city. The castle is Scotland’s most popular tourist attraction and, in addition to unbeatable views of the city, offers historic re-enactments, displays, shops and cafes.
The castle forms one end of the famous Royal Mile, which connects the 16th century stronghold to the Palace of Holyrood House. Holyrood has been the residence of Kings and Queens of Scotland for almost 600 years and is the official Scottish residence of Queen Elizabeth II. When Her Majesty is not in residence, guided tours of some areas of the palace are often available.
Also situated on the Royal Mile is the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre. If you’re a fan of Scotland’s most reluctant export you’ll be pleased to know that as well as guided tours and explanations of how different whiskies are made there is also the opportunity for a tasting session.
Other top Royal Mile attractions include the Camera Obscura (including the World of Illusions) and the Museum of Childhood, which features an extensive collection of childrens’ books and toys from days gone by.
Edinburgh is also home to the Fringe, a wonderfully entertaining performing arts festival, which is now the largest in the world. If you are lucky enough to be in the city during August expect to see huge crowds taking in the street performances and the many theatre and comedy shows.
If you would like to experience the Fringe be sure to book early. We have city centre holiday apartments to get you right into the thick of the action. Or if you would prefer more tranquil surroundings, our luxury Edinburgh apartments will let you enjoy proceedings before retreating to peaceful, superbly-appointed accommodation.
